Lyrical Line Drawing This was one of the first drawings completed in class. I had to pick at least 5 items from the prop closet to draw inside geometrical shapes of my choice. Lines had to be thicker where shadows were seen and lighter lines where the highlights were seen. I choose somewhat of a garden scene. This drawing is on drawing paper using graphite pencils.
Value Study - Lilies Although this drawing was very time consuming it is one of my favorite drawings. Our instructor, Lisa Mack, provided all the students with photographs of Lilies that we were to draw from. We started with the background then worked with the actual Lily. The idea was to show the dark and light areas (value scale) without any visible lines. We were given the option to draw one large Lily, or draw 2 to 3 smaller scale Lilies. This drawing was done using graphite pencils on a cream colored drawing paper.
Charcoal Still Life - Bell Peppers This drawing was our first drawing using charcoal. I have never used charcoal until this class. Basically to make the background you smear charcoal all over your paper with your hand then use your erasure to draw. Shading is done with adding more charcoal and highlights are achieved using an erasure and white charcoal pencil. This charcoal drawing was done on cream colored drawing paper.

Charcoal Still Life - Pears The main focus on this drawing assignment was the drapery. We had the choice of just drawing fabric, or we could draw the fabric and a pear or two. Our instructor draped several boxes scattering them along the center staging area of the art room. Then she placed several pears on the fabric. We were able to choose which view we preferred. The fabric was a rich velvet or velveteen type of fabric. This charcoal drawing was done on white drawing paper.

One Point Lineal Perspective This project was very time consuming and very challenging. I think that is why I liked it so much. We were asked to come up with photos from magazines or books that have a one point perspective that we would draw from. I poured over many different options but could only find one J C Penny ad from a bridal magazine that I really liked that fit the criteria. Drawing figures/people was not covered in my drawing class, but I chose to do it anyways. I love the way it turned out. My instructor had the comment that it was fitting that the couple is on a chess board because soon they will be at odds. Given what I have been through it was the perfect picture to draw for this assignment. This charcoal drawing is on white drawing paper.

Two Point Lineal Perspective This assignment went hand in hand with the one point. We could complete one of the two assignments in graphite pencil as long as one drawing was in charcoal. I choose to do my two point in graphite pencil and after 40 hours into this drawing, I wished I had gone with the charcoal. Again, as with the one point the picture to draw from was our choice as long as it met the two point criteria and was approved by our instructor. This drawing is drawn from a stock photo I found online that met the two point criteria. Even though I thought I would never finish it, I am proud of the way it turned out in the end.
Word Drawing - Monet This assignment was lots of fun. We were asked to come up with a word that was no more than 5 to 6 letters long. I choose "Monet" because Claude Monet is my favorite artist and it is also the name of my youngest daughter who is more than a handful. We then took strips of white paper and folded them to make the letters the way we wanted them to look. Then we drew what we saw. This charcoal drawing is on white drawing paper.

Stencil Drawing - The Last Leaf This assignment was our last assignment and came after the two point and one point drawings. It was fun and easy, which was nice after spending long hard hours on the perspective drawings. The assignment was to find an image that can be made into a stencil. I found a stock image of a fairy to use for my stencil. In addition to the stencil elements, we were also required to have a 3-D element incorporated into the drawing. We had the freedom to choose the layout and stencils we wanted to use. I stuck with a simple whimsical fairy. Since I have all girls and I love fairytales, this was an easy choice. The last leaf standing is kind of symbolic to my life about a year ago.
